The Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University three-year MD program (3YMD @ RSOM)

Students who are accepted into the 3YMD enter a pipeline program that links them with the RSOM residency program of their choice. The completion of a total of 14 weeks of summer academic credits allows 3YMD students to fulfill the requirements for an MD degree, and complete 135 weeks in three years. Ten weeks of summer academic credits is completed within the GME program of their choice, ensuring that 3YMD students are assimilated into their departments and comfortable with their career choice. The 3YMD program began in 2018.

  • Completing the requirements for the MD degree in three years saves time, reduces the cost of education and promotes earlier entry into career

  • Two points of admission. Time of matriculation or opt-in in February of first year of medical school. Admission process includes an essay and interview with residency program director.

  • First 2.5 years curriculum (Phase I and I) is the same as the four-year pathway allowing easy transition to four-year program if necessary

  • 3YMD students are required to complete a sub-internship and 8 weeks of elective credit in Phase III

  • Linkages with RSOM GME program, with participation in the NRMP

  • Early integration into GME program allows students to establish a longitudinal, relationship with the GME faculty, opportunities for shadowing, research and conference attendance

  • Ongoing mentorship and advising with the both UME and GME mentors

  • Early integration and mentorship allows for tracking of competencies over the entire UME to GME continuum, facilitating a smooth transition to residency

  • Required completion of Teaching in Medicine elective ensures that 3YMD graduates will be competent educators when they become RSOM residents.
