The VCU School of Medicine is committed to training the clinicians, scientists and scholars of tomorrow. More than 1000 students from around the world come to the VCU School of Medicine to pursue medical and graduate degrees as well as specialized certificate training. Additionally, many students enroll in our Combined/Dual Degree programs, thereby enhancing skills in complementary areas.

VCU medical, graduate and certificate students train under the guidance of our faculty which collectively represents more than 200 specialty areas in medicine and has have received local, regional, national and international recognition for excellence in clinical practice, biomedical research and education.

VCU began the competency-based graduation (CBG) program in 2018. Our program offers the opportunity for students to complete their medical curriculum in three years. Students apply and are selected in the first semester of their second year with enrollment into the CBG program following successful completion of USMLE Step 1. Students are placed in a specifically designated track in their clerkship year of medical school that provides them an accelerated path to graduation and direct progression into one of several participating residency programs at VCU and regionally. Progression is determined by a competency committee based on summative assessment of performance. These programs currently include Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, OB-GYN, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry with plans to expand into other specialties. We have graduated two successful cohorts thus far with five students in cohort 2020 and four students in cohort 2021 respectively.
